Last week, it became public that former Secretary of State Ken Bennett has been quietly lobbying the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to remove the Elections Department from under the supervision of the Maricopa County Recorder's Office. Not only that, he'd like to be appointed to head the Elections Department, but only if it's independent from the Recorder's Office.

Over the past few years, Maricopa County voters encountered repeated obstacles originating from the County Recorder's Office like extremely long lines during the Presidential Preference Election in March, the distribution of incorrect and misleading information. The office then proceeded to blame the long lines on the voters for voting.

In November, Maricopa County voters elected a new Recorder who ran largely on a platform that included expanded access to polling places, increasing civic engagement, and safer and secure elections. Removing Recorder Fontes as the county's top election's official would be an insult to the voters and the newly elected Recorder alike.

The Supervisors have signaled that they aren't eager to make this change, but we want to send a message to the County Board of Supervisors to let them know that attempts to undermine voters and the Maricopa County Recorder's Office will not be tolerated now or in the future. If you live in Maricopa County, please take a minute to to call or e-mail your Supervisor and ask them to oppose such a change. If you aren't sure which Supervisor District you live in, you can find out here.
